New actors and methods of operation in ransomware

Information security now!

During the past year, various ransomwares have spread faster and faster around the world. The variations of ransomware and the number of actors have also increased.

In Finland, between 2020 and 2022, an average of 40 ransomware cases per year were reported to the National Cyber Security Centre Finland. The beginning of 2023 showed a similar trend, but a moderate increase in the number of reports has been observed during November. When examining the number of reports, it must be noted that they include both cases targeting the cloud storages of citizens' home networks, as well as cases targeting large multinational organisations, as well as everything in between. In the cases reported to the National Cyber Security Centre Finland, the majority are ransomware variations that are also noticeable abroad.
