Finnish organisations targeted by Akira ransomware

Information security now!

The National Cyber Security Centre Finland received 12 reports of Akira ransomware cases from Finnish organisations in 2023. The incidents were particularly related to weakly secured Cisco VPN implementations or their unpatched vulnerabilities. Recovery is usually hard.

The Akira ransomware, which was first detected in Finland in June 2023, has been particularly active at the end of the year, according to the findings of the NCSC-FI. Of the ransomware cases reported to the NCSC-FI in December, six out of seven involved malwares of the Akira type. Out of these, three were found to be more active during the longer holidays of the Christmas season. In addition, during Christmas, there was one incident caused by another malware type.

Ransomware cases usually cause significant trouble and costs for organisations. The attacks emphasize the importance of preparation and pre-thought-out procedures, because the situation after the deviation starts is stressful.
