August marked the end of the calm summer season for cyber security. Storm clouds gathered particularly in the areas of data breaches as well as malware and vulnerabilities.
The end of the holiday period and the return to work were once again reflected in a clear rise in the number of cases reported to the NCSC-FI. During August, Microsoft 365 data breach reports in particular showed significant growth, tripling compared with July. The month’s cyber weather was also weakened by serious vulnerabilities, such as the global SharePoint vulnerability.
Phishing activity likewise remained high throughout August. As autumn begins, it is a good time to remind staff of common security rules and the different ways to recognise potential phishing messages and fraud attempts.
