Traficom Puts Cybersecurity on the Agenda of Corporate Boards

Information security now!

The National Cyber Security Centre Finland at the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (NCSC-FI) has put together a cybersecurity handbook to help senior corporate management secure their digital business operations.

NCSC-FI has published a cybersecurity handbook for corporate boards. The handbook, entitled Cybersecurity and the Responsibilities of Boards, provides organisations with tools and support for increased cybersecurity.

As companies’ dependence on digital services and systems increases, so does the number of cyberthreats they face.

“The events of the past year have shown that cyberattacks can interrupt or even permanently disable a company’s operations. Information security can no longer be considered a strictly technical problem, but must be seen as a central part of companies’ risk management processes and put on the agenda of senior management, boards and owners”, said Kalle Luukkainen, Deputy Director-General at NCSC-FI.

A well-constructed cybersecurity defence protects a company’s operations and ensures that it can utilise digital technologies to their full benefit. It is therefore crucial that members of corporate boards have the necessary understanding of cybersecurity questions and associated business risks.

“Corporate decision-makers have traditionally viewed information security matters as highly technical and difficult to understand. We have designed a concrete tool to help corporate boards ask the right questions in order to accurately assess the state of information security in their organisations. We tailored the handbook to the perspective of corporate management, with no IT skills or command of specialist terminology required”, Luukkainen adds.

While the Cybersecurity and the Responsibilities of Boards handbook was written with the boards of large and medium-sized organisations particularly in mind, it also works as an everyday tool for cybersecurity officers and can be used by organisations of all sizes and sectors.

The handbook is available in Finnish, Swedish and English and can be downloaded in PDF format on the NCSC-FI website at https://www.kyberturvallisuuskeskus.fi/en/publications/cyber-security-and-responsibilities-boards (External link)
